The earth itself is a phenomenon all its own. Naturally there is much debate on how we got here and how we are able to breathe the air that we do. Life sciences are a conglomerate of all the fields of science that involves the study of living organisms, such as animals, plants and of course human beings. How those organisms behave all the way down to the molecular level is what intrigues scientists and us that are simply interested in the life that we have. The list of divisions of life sciences is mile long and is being added to daily.
Biology and medicine are the majority of life sciences but the technological advances in biology and biotechnology have lead to many other fields. Those fields are, but are not limited to agro technology, bioengineering, biochemistry and many others. For the sake of this article we will not cover all the many difference disciplines of life sciences. We will talk about biology and medicine.
Biology in its simplest form is a natural science with the focus of life and living organisms. Biology includes the structure, the function, the growth, origin, evolution, distribution and the taxonomy of an organism. When you bring up the topic of biology, you can talk about it for days since it is, at the basic level, the study of how we live, breath and our behaviors. When you take a look at the basic topics of biology you will find that there are five principles that can be said are the foundation of biology. Those principles are:
- Cells are the basic unit of life
- New species are inherited traits are the product of evolution
- Genes are the basic unit of heredity
- An organism will regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition
- Living organisms consume and transform energy.
You can find other principles to discus, but these are considered to be the basic principles that other topics can expound off of. There are so many different branches of biology such as cellular biology, molecular biology and many others, that the list would be endless. There is a discipline for almost every part of the body at many different levels.
Medicine is a vast and often debated topic of life sciences . Medicine is defined simply as the science and art of healing. This is where health care is talked about and debated often. Medicine conversations speak often about how to restore health, how to prevent getting sick and also the treatment of if you become ill. In the early days, medicine was practiced in rituals and religious traditions. Those traditions and practices of yesteryear combined with the research and development of now, give us what the healing power of medicine we have today. When looking through the history of medicine, you will find many different trials and studies to see if the medicine did work and on what group of people, animals, etc would it be a consistent option for a cure. Without medicine, we would be in a world of trouble.
Life sciences are a study that encompasses all the life we see, feel and live. Our behaviors are what make us different but without the medicines and the studies we have endured we could not wonder where we would be today. There are many things we can learn from our past and there are still many things that we are continuing to learn about the life on this planet.
